Processing

Compression

Pressing tea into bricks, cakes or tuocha for storage and transport — the foundation of pu-erh and brick teas.

Compressed tea travels well, ages slowly, and was once used as currency along the Tea Horse Road. The seven-cake (357 g) bing cha and the bowl-shaped tuocha are the most familiar shapes today.
